Some other thread in the NW forum this morn reminded me of this issue, which has really started to stick in my craw mainly because it seems so arbitrarily applied. I'm hoping someone on hither (mayhap a bar owner or lawyer, or peradventure a state legislator who as well happens to be a BA) can explicate it to me in a mode that makes sense.

In Washington, minors can't go into "bars" or "pubs" meaning apparently whatsoever institution that serves beer, vino, and/or liquor that doesn't accept some kind of wall (not sure on the top requirement) between where the alcohol is served and where the tables and chairs are (where nutrient is served). It apparently doesn't thing if the place has a pretty wide food menu, and it doesn't affair how far from the bar you lot are sitting; every bit far as I can tell, what's needed is some kind of wall (I could be wrong about this). We've taken our kid to a place that has 20 taps and a pretty meager nutrient menu, just has a wall no problem. But then nosotros go up the street to another identify that has five taps and a much wider nutrient menu, just no wall —a nd have been denied entry.

Now I can see why sure bars are (and should be) adults only. These are not the places I desire to take our kid anyway. Merely there are other places that, aside from that missing wall, have a local, family-type atmosphere. On several occasions, we've had family in boondocks and wanted to take them to a favorite pub/eatery (which, by the way, nosotros had been able to enter with our child as an baby) only to be told "no minors immune."

It'due south frustrating. And frankly it feels like we are being discriminated confronting. Just considering I'm sitting in a pub, eating a repast and drinking a beer, doesn't mean I'k going to let our kid consume alcohol. If we're far enough away from the bar at our ain table, nosotros're non exposing our child to undesirable linguistic communication etc. And I can't imagine that having a kid on the premises is going to bother any of the other patrons either —although I guess some people tin can exist pretty intolerant.

I assume the laws are similar in Oregon. We ran into the same issue recently down in Portland, in a downtown hotel. Nosotros'd simply gotten into town later a funeral and were famished, but the hotel eatery was not open yet (effectually 3 p.chiliad.) and they couldn't serve us nutrient in the "bar" area, which was basically a bunch of tables and chairs and a large-screen Idiot box. Made absolutely no sense to us. Then nosotros had to walk downwardly the street to a Chipotle.

Anyway, here'due south the applicative code from the RCW: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=66.44.310 I'd appreciate if anyone could explain this to me, it might help me figure out where I can and tin can't eat and beverage for the next couple of decades. Cheers!

I, too, would love for clarification on this. Been in Elliott Bay Brewing in Due west Seattle several times with our baby. Randomly turned away at other places. Able to enter Super Cafeteria Mart (beer on tap) simply unable to enter Bottleworks.

At that place are various licenses. If you have a "tavern" license, you can only serve beer, wine and cider, and minors aren't allowed in at all. A "total service" (I'm non sure of the bodily license name) means you have to serve a sure number of "meals" ( I worked at a bar once that had a squeamish pizza oven and we made pizza's, calzones, salads and a few sandwiches. None of these items met the LCB's definition of a "meal". We kept 5 different frozen TV dinners in the freezer. Those did encounter the LCB's definition of a meal. Become figure.) and have a separate dining area. The separation tin can exist something equally simple equally a railing, it only has to be a articulate dividing line.

There were changes made last year for beer stores. If a store got a Tavern license, they could sell beer by the glass as well every bit beer to become, but you couldn't have your kids in. If they had a retail license,y'all could take kids in, just not serve on-premise. They changed that now so that you tin take kids into stores to buy off-premise beer and drink on premise while yous're in that location.

Then basically, if yous serve spirits, you must serve "meals" (even clubs similar the Showbox, which don't have kitchens, take their 5 Telly dinners in a freezer to come across that requirement. There was talk of creating a "Cabaret" license which would comprehend this and exclude them, just I don't know if that'southward happened.), and can allow minors in a separate dining room. If you lot're only a "beer bar", you lot're exempt from the food requirements, merely minors can't come up in at all. Promise this helps. I need a beer later thinking about this.

Okay, and so now tin can someone explicate Oregon? Why practise some establishments allow minors until 6 vs 8 vs x?
  5. The OLCC requires minors to exist out by 10pm (unless it'south changed recently), but it's up to the establishment to determine exactly when they want to go kid free. By and large speaking, family unit-oriented places (like HUB and Laurelwood) tend to permit kids as late equally possible to capture every bit much bachelor business concern equally they can, while other places that are more alcohol-focused (like the Horsebrass) tend to go kid free earlier in the evening so that they can concenter people who don't want to be surrounded past children while they get drunk.

"while other places that are more booze-focused (like the Horsebrass) tend to go child costless earlier in the evening so that they tin attract people who don't want to be surrounded by children while they get drunk"

I recall that captures my reason for liking the horsebrass then much in a nutshell. Well, that and the fact that they almost always have Blue Dot on tap there. :-)

    What beertunes said.

1 matter that bugs me, and I assume has zippo to practise with liquor laws, is when a identify has happy hour in the bar but regular pricing in the eating house. It's like a fee for having kids with you lot.

It'south not a kid penalty, but a way to bulldoze business organisation to the bar. I think a lot of confined would similar to get rid of Happy Hours, merely it's the kind of thing they recollect they have to do because everyone else is doing it. Information technology's funny sometimes to see people come up into a bar 10 minutes after HH and get mad because they don't get their L cents or a buck off a drink, simply it tin can frustrate staff.
  9. Not certain the reasons why, simply here in Oregon No Food = No Kids. Oakshire has sandwiches shipped in on Saturdays so kids can come to the brewery with their parents. 16 Tons in Eugene had to shut out minors when they got their taps because they didn't serve food.

I don't intendance well-nigh that as much; usually if I'k going to some kind of pub/eatery with my family it's to eat equally much every bit to drink. What bugs me is the seemingly capricious nature about which of these places permit minors and which don't. Beertunes' explanation about unlike licenses makes sense (sort of), but it still seems pretty random in a lot of cases. I presume the situations in Oregon and Washington are pretty like, based on personal experience and anecdotes here.
  11. It'south unlikely that whatever of these places are going to showtime having uniform family-friendly hours, so I would advise keeping a mental note or even a real list of places on your smartphone that y'all want to frequent and the hours in which kids are allowed.

I'll commencement (off the height of my head):

Naked Metropolis allows kids at all hours in designated areas
Big Time allows kids until 9 pm (or 8?) but not in the bar surface area
Hudson allows kids at all hours in designated areas
The Red Door allows kids at all hours in designated areas
Tangletown allows kids at all hours in designated areas
Barking Dog Alehouse allows kids at all hours in designated areas
Roosevelt Ale House allows kids at all hours in designated areas

    Brouwer'southward does non allow kids
74th Street Ale House does not allow kids
Uber Tavern does not allow kids
Duck Island does non allow kids
Cooper's Alehouse does not let kids

Fremont Brewing/Urban Beer Garden allows kids (and leashed dogs) at all hours in all areas

Funny the article uses St. Louis as an case - that's where I was born and raised. No wonder I've been perplexed by these rules; they're different from what I grew up with. And until I became a dad (hither in Seattle), I had no reason to be aware of it.

I grew upwards in England, and everyone takes their child to the pub. If yous accept a meal, you can purchase your >14 year old a beer to have with his meal.
This countrys so crazy about booze they carte du jour xxx twelvemonth olds for a mere pint.....

Hell I've been carded and I'm 42. Ridiculous.
  16. I had this happen to me in Portland with my baby daughter. I had no idea that a 8 week sometime babe in a "resturant" setting was considered a drinking small-scale. I was pretty pissed.

This never fabricated sense to me. It's not like a baby is going to drinkable. I took my daughter to Deschutes and HotD all the time. Wendy started to call up her proper name considering we were there so much. The food selection is pretty limited there equally well. Deschutes on the other mitt is oft packed with kids.

If a business owner wants to keep kids out, and miss out on business, and then that is what they are doing.
